The European Community for Coal and Steel, the European Economic Community and Euratom Treaties, signed in 1951 and 1957 respectively, are at the origin of the European Union. The European Union was founded with the aim to promote peace, security and prosperity throughout Europe. First and foremost, the EU therefore is based on a commitment to shared values such as democracy, the rule of law, freedom and human rights, as well as the promotion of a single market.
